At Sand and Cedar Signs your sign is manufactured from 2 inch thick kiln dried, quarter
sawn western red cedar. Once a size and shape is selected the cedar boards are
planed, edged and then biscuit laminated together using marine grade adhesives
to ensure proper bonding. Your cottage sign blank is then shaped and sanded in
preparation for sandblasting.
Sandblasting is a method of natural relief
carving. A rubber or vinyl stencil is placed on the sign blank where you do not
want the effects of the sand to etch the wood. Where there was no stencil the
background is blasted with a high pressure mixture of sand and air leaving behind
a textured look showing the natural beauty of the cedar's vertical grain. The
stencil is then removed showing the raised lettering or graphic.
Once
your cottage sign has been sandblasted it is then re-sanded and sealed with two
coats of spar-urethane to keep out the moisture and UV rays. The painting process
of your sign is now ready to begin. The paints used on your sign are special sign
paints that are also UV and moisture protected. Because of this entire process
your cottage sign is built to withstand years of outdoor use be it a small or
large sign.
